How to make the Stockholm railway/metro map function more as diagram for navigation using the design principles of Harry Beck.

This study was done in early 2023 with the information on new lines and changes available at the time.

The simplifies station names where SL (transport authority) uses different station names for the same station depending on which line. Such as Stockholm Odenplan if using the Pendeltåg but simply Odenplan if using the Metro, both lines connect within the fare gates.

Inspired by cities like London, each line of the metro has been given a name to make the introduction of metro colours more intuitive in conversation, as well as creating a distinct identity for that line. For instance, the Green Line is renamed after Greta Garbo who grew up, has a square named after her, and is buried at stations along the line.

The graphic thickness of the line denotes type of rail. Thickest is the Pendeltåg (commuter rail) which runs along national rail lines, and the thinnest are the light rail and trams.

An interchange between two different lines and final stops are shown as rounded squares, whereas line splits are shown as large circles. This makes finding changes on routes far easier, especially for new users. Route numbers are retained as these synergise with bus and ferry services throughout the region.

Each interchange or split station is distributed on an equal square grid for legibility.
